Trends in Non-alcoholic Beverages wins Gourmand Award in Non-Alcoholic Drinks Category
We are happy to announce that the Gourmand Awards have named Trends in Non-alcoholic Beverages by Charis Galanakis the United Kingdom Winner in the category Non-Alcoholic Drinks. Trends in Non-alcoholic Beverages will go on to compete against five other titles from Europe, Asia, and Australia for the designation of Best in the World.
Galanakis’ book covers all manner of topics related to non-alcoholic drinks, from nutritional effects to the most recent advances in food science relating to non-alcoholic drinks. It’s certainly a hot topic in the global beverage industry, as more and more people around the globe are opting not to drink alcohol. The IWSR, which tracks alcohol trends around the world, reported a 1.6% decrease in global alcohol consumption for the year 2018 (the most recent year that data is available). Furthermore, they note that “low- and no-alcohol brands are showing significant growth… consumers increasingly seek better-for-you products.”

Wellness, a broad term which can encompass everything from a daily yoga practice to a paleo or vegan diet, is increasingly sought by consumers looking to improve their daily quality of life. The low- or no-alcohol movement (what one writer terms “sober curious”) is an effort by consumers to re-evaluate their relationship with the popular beverage. It’s a flexible approach to drinking, one which encompasses a range of lifestyle choices from drinking a lower quantity of alcohol but opting for a higher quality (a trend that the IWSR noticed in wine) to selecting spirit-free cocktails or beverages like seltzer or juice.
Trends in Non-alcoholic Beverages covers all the necessary topics that food scientists, nutritionists, and other food and beverage industry professionals require in order to understand this rapidly changing landscape. With coverage of drinks ranging from carbonated beverages to non-dairy milks to ready-to-drink teas, food scientists in all corners of the beverage industry will find this a worthy reference. Galanakis is a prolific author and a powerhouse in the food science sector. Concerned with sustainability and environmentalism in the industry, he is a leading researcher who has worked on projects all around the globe.
Elsevier are delighted to see Trends in Non-alcoholic Beverages recognized on the international stage of the Gourmand Awards, and are excited to see if it secure the title of at the Gourmand Awards Ceremony in May.
