Fifty Years of Annual Reports on NMR Spectroscopy

Around seventy years ago NMR was a curiosity, based upon signals from hydrogen nuclei (protons), mainly of interest to physicists.  Today the tool of choice in solving problems relating to molecular structure and dynamics is invariably one of the many forms of NMR now available.  The transition from curiosity to unrivaled diagnostic technique in the molecular sciences has been chronicled by the many reviews published in Annual Reports on NMR Spectroscopy over the past fifty years.  Some of these are mentioned below.

The importance of NMR has grown with increases in the sensitivity of the measurements…  These enhancements have become available due to the use of higher magnetic fields and developments in the radio frequency techniques employed coupled with computer control of the measurements.  Most elements listed in the periodic table have at least one nuclide that is suitable for NMR studies.  With sensitivity increases NMR spectra have been recorded for all of them.  Some of the relevant reviews are to be found in the following volumes of Annual Reviews on NMR Spectroscopy, Volume 11A chapter 4, Volume 11B chapters 18 and 25, Volume 12 chapter 3, Volume 20 chapters 2 and 3, Volume 19 chapter 1, Volume 68 chapter 1, Volume 22 chapter 5, Volume 23 chapter 3, Volume 24 chapter 5, Volume 54 chapter 4, Volume 10A chapter 1, Volume 66 chapter 5 and Volume 84 chapter 3.

The increasing sensitivity of NMR measurements has made it possible for ever smaller samples to provide satisfactory NMR data.  This has been of particular importance for advances in the life sciences, Biology, Medicine, Pharmacy and Biochemistry as well as the Chemical Sciences.  Some reviews are to be found in Volume 20 chapter 1, Volume 32 chapter 3, Volume 42 chapter 8, Volume 83 chapter 4, Volume 27 chapter 1, Volume 48 chapter 3, Volume 87 chapter 5, Volume 29 chapter 3, Volume 59 chapter 5, Volume 38 chapters 1 and 2.

Some other areas of science that have been benefited from the greater applicability of NMR are Food Science, Volume 26 chapter 1, Volume 31 chapter 1, Volume 32 chapter 1, Volume 42 chapter 3, Volume 47 chapter 3 and Volume 58 chapter 4; Materials Science and Fuel Cell Developments, Volume 28 chapter 1, Volume 55 chapter 4, Volume 85 chapter 1, Volume 87 chapter 4, Volume 37 chapter 1, Volume 30 chapter 2, Volume 41 chapter 4.  In addition other areas with advances of note are Forensic Science, Volume 32 chapter 4, Organic Thin Films Volume 28 chapter 5, Oil Shale Research Volume 33 chapter 5, Horticultural Products Volume 50 chapter 2 and NMR Crystallography Volume 82 chapter 1.

In addition to progress in NMR Spectroscopy Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has become very important in investigations of three-dimensional structures. Examples of this are provided by studies on cancer tumors, Volume 27 chapter 4 and Volume 87 chapter 5; and various solid materials, Volume 24 chapter 2.

Unlike many investigative procedures NMR measurements can be taken on Solids, Liquids and Gases which has led to the widespread applicability of NMR studies.

The past fifty years have been very busy and productive ones for the ever increasing number of scientists working with NMR on a daily basis.  There is little reason to suppose that the next fifty years will witness advances in NMR techniques, and their applications, that are any less exciting and creative.  These developments will be covered by reviews in Annual Reports on NMR Spectroscopy.
