Elsevier’s Serials: Rising Impact Factors

By: , Posted on: November 2, 2020

With thanks to our world-class subject expert Serial, Volume Editors, and Editorial Advisory Boards commissioning content written by global leading researchers, Serials have had another sterling set of Impact Factor results during this year’s annual release of the 2019 results.

The Serials programme is very well established: we have 76 serial and handbook titles and from 2021 we will have Serials and Handbooks covering 15 subject areas: Behaviour, Biomedical Research, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Earth and Environmental Science, Energy, Finance, Food Science, Fundamental Life Science, Material Science, Maths, Neuroscience, Physics and Social Science.

A significant number of Serials and Handbooks have for decades existed and flourished in tandem with their subject counterparts in journals and books (for example, Solid State Physics and Methods in Enzymology began in 1955; Methods in Enzymology is currently on volume 645); we are also preparing to publish new serials in 2021 in the areas of movement disorders and biogerontology.

What makes our Serials stand out? To summarise they offer a greater depth of detail, analysis and methodology than traditional review articles.

Impact Factor is a citation indicator released by Clarivate (formerly Thomson) on an annual basis, and is one established measure of a serial publication’s quality; the result of comparing the number of published articles to the number of citations received over a set [usually two year] period. It is by no means the only definitive metric; more recently, additional measurements of success have grown to provide a fuller picture and to inform strategic decision-making regarding volume content and author selection, including:

A snapshot of the book series’ achievements this year include:

  • 22 Serials are ranked in the first quartile of their respective categories;
  • 27 Serials saw their Impact Factors increase in 2019;
  • Methods in Enzymology had the most Serial cites in 2019 (24,518); the highest category ranking for citations (10); and the most citable items (257)
  • Advances in Applied Mechanics and Advances in Agronomy are both ranked 2nd in their categories Engineering, Mechanical / Social and Agronomy, respectively);
  • Advances in Applied Mechanics has the highest IF of 8.333;
  • Advances in Geophysics and Advances in Carbohydrate Chemistry and Biochemistry had the two highest ranking Impact Factor % increases (by 150% and 138% respectively).
  • 22 Serials where impact factor has increased by a significant amount (≥10%):
