National Women in Engineering Day

The 23rd  of June marks National Women in Engineering Day, which was originally set up by the Women’s Engineering Society (WES) to celebrate its 95th anniversary.

Since 2014 WES has wanted to focus attention on the great opportunities for women in engineering, at a time when it has never been more important to address the engineering skills shortage. By encouraging girls into engineering careers they hope to not only be increase diversity and inclusion – a common business imperative – but also help fill the substantial future job opportunities that have been predicted in this sector.

We take some time to celebrate some Elsevier Authors and Editors who have made a valuable contribution to the field of engineering:

janette edmondsJanette Edmonds is a Chartered Ergonomics and Human Factors Specialist. She won the William F Floyd Award in 1999, and has been a director of the Keil Centre since 2009. Janette has a wide range of experience within industries including oil & gas, petrochemical, chemical processing and plastics, nuclear, manufacturing, the emergency services, defence, rail, telecoms, and medical products. She has been a human factors manager for several engineering / design projects and has considerable experience of human factors applied to operational assets, incident investigation and expert testimony.  Jeanette’s latest book Human Factors in the Chemical and Process Industries is due to publish in October.

solange mussattoDr. Solange I. Mussatto is Invited Assistant Professor at the Department of Biotechnology at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in The Netherlands. She has a background in Chemical Industrial Engineering, and MSc and PhD degrees in Industrial Biotechnology from University of São Paulo. Dr. Mussatto has over 17 years of experience in the areas of Biomass Pretreatment and Fermentation Technology with focus on the development of biorefinery strategies for total conversion and valorization of biomass. During her research career, she has been actively involved in activities related to the conversion of biomass into valuable biobased products. Her research interests include the use of chemical, biochemical, biological and thermal processes for biomass pretreatment and chemical or fermentation conversion of materials into valuable compounds such as ethanol, xylitol, organic acids, fructooligosaccharides, bioactive compounds, alcoholic beverages, and enzymes, among others. Dr. Mussatto has participated in numerous research projects and has published more than 115 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 13 book chapters, 3 patents and more than 230 papers in scientific conferences. She is Associate Editor of the Brazilian Journal of Microbiology, Editorial Board Member of the Biofuel Research Journal, and has been on the advisory board of several leading international scientific journals and international funding agencies. evelyne thiffaultDr. Evelyne Thiffault is an assistant professor in forest bioenergy and forest soil ecology and forest biomass at the Department of Wood and Forest Sciences of Laval University, Canada and member of the Research Centre on Renewable Materials. She has a degree in forest engineering and a PhD in forest sciences, both from Laval University. Since 2009 she has managed research programs on the ecological effects of forest management on ecosystems, and on forest bioenergy value chains. She has authored or co-authored 26 research articles and 4 book chapters related to forest bioenergy at the local, national and international scales. She is also a member of Canada’s national team on IEA-Bioenergy Task 43: Biomass feedstocks for energy markets and Task 40: Sustainable international bioenergy trade. Dr. Thiffault’s latest book Mobilisation of Forest Bioenergy in the Boreal and Temperate Biomes is available now.

lorraine francisDr. Lorraine F. Francis is Distinguished University Teaching Professor and Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Minnesota (UMN). She holds a Ph.D. in Ceramic Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and has 25 years of research and teaching experience at UMN. Prof. Francis has taught and developed a variety of materials science courses. Her research focuses on material processing topics, and she is co-leader of the Coating Process Fundamentals Program at UMN, an industrial partnership research program devoted to the science and engineering of liquid applied coatings.  Materials Processing, Lorraine’s latest book is available on the Elsevier store.

pamela mccauley bushPamela McCauley Bush, is a leader, innovator and motivator. She is currently an Associate Professor and Director of the Ergonomics Laboratory, Industrial Engineering and Management Systems Department at the University of Central Florida. She is also the Chief Technology Officer of Bush Enterprises/Tech-Solutions, Inc. Dr. Bush is a successful researcher and innovator as demonstrated by the numerous federal research grants, technical publications, and national and international committee appointments to her credit. She is a nationally recognized motivational speaker in the Women’s Leaders and STEM Education communities. Transforming Your STEM Career Through Leadership and Innovation was published in November 2012.
