The increasing industry and academic interest in LTE/LTE-Advanced technologies and their fast deployment around the world, has inspired publication of a large number of books, articles, white papers, and application notes in the recent years, which describe various aspects LTE/LTE-Advanced standards and technologies.
It is evident that the standards specifications are not meant to be used for learning the underlying concepts and system engineering aspects of the technologies that they describe. To obtain an in-depth understanding of why and how each functional component was selected and how it interacts with the rest of the system, either the reader must be directly involved in the development of the standard or the reader must rely on technical references that may provide such an in-depth description of the technology.
A general problem with the existing literature in this area is that the authors/editors have not provided the readers with any perspective of how various components are interconnected and/or inter-operate from system engineering point of view. There are only few books and journal papers, under this topic, which have taken a reader-friendly approach to describe the theory and implementation of LTE/LTE-Advanced systems. Also, due to the very large scope of the subject, many existing books are mainly a collection of chapters written by various authors and edited by a few editors, resulting in some discontinuity in the content and disparity in the quality and style across these books.
My upcoming book, LTE-Advanced: A Practical Systems Approach to Understanding 3GPP LTE Releases 10 and 11 Radio Access Technologies (available now for pre-order) is among the first books which are exclusively dedicated to describing LTE Rel-10 and beyond technologies, theory and implementation, by an author who has been involved in the inception and development of these technologies for nearly two decades. An earlier book by this author published by Academic Press in 2010 took the same approach to describe mobile WiMAX and was very well received in the industry and academia.
This book provides a structured technical reference on one of the latest advances in mobile broadband wireless access technologies (including both theoretical and practical aspects of the technology) for engineers, researches, professors, and graduate students working or studying in the areas of cellular communication systems and protocols, or advanced radio access technologies for 4G/5G systems. This book may also find application as a reference for better and more thorough understanding of the LTE Rel-10 and beyond standards by engineers and experts that are implementing or simulating these technologies.

Dr. Sassan Ahmadi is a senior wireless systems architect and cellular standards expert with over 25 years of experience in signal processing and communication system design as well as cellular systems standards development. He was a leading technical contributor to the definition and development of requirements and evaluation methodology for the IMT-Advanced systems in ITU-R. He was also a technical contributor and leader in the development of the IMT-Advanced standards in ITU-R, IEEE, and 3GPP.
